Earth Hour 2025 Kicks Off in Hanoi

Hanoi, March 22, 2025 – The Europe Today: Earth Hour 2025, under the theme “Green Transition – Green Future,” officially launched at Hoàn Kiếm Lake on Saturday morning, drawing thousands of residents, organizations, and businesses united in their commitment to environmental sustainability.

This year’s Earth Hour event was transformed into a vibrant community festival, designed to promote sustainable living practices while raising awareness about the critical importance of energy transition. Vũ Chi Mai, representing the GIZ Energy Support Programme (ESP), shared, “This is our fourth year supporting Earth Hour in Vietnam. We aim to make energy efficiency a natural part of daily life and contribute to a green economy.”

Lê Anh Thư, Vice Chairwoman of the Hoàn Kiếm District People’s Committee, emphasized the urgent need to address climate change. She proudly noted that Hoàn Kiếm District successfully saved 15.4 million kWh of electricity in 2024, with plans to further reduce consumption by 2.2 percent in 2025.

The event featured interactive activities designed to engage the public in sustainable practices, including a solar-powered Hanoi balcony model and a cycling challenge in which participants generated electricity to charge mobile phones and power the “I am for Net-Zero” LED board. Students from Hanois universities invigorated the crowd with a dynamic flashmob, encouraging environmental responsibility and collective action.

Phạm Thế Dũng, Deputy Head of the State Agency for Technology Innovation, underscored the importance of small actions in achieving a larger green transition. “Every step counts in fostering sustainable development and enhancing our national competitiveness,” Dũng stated.

Trần Việt Nguyên from Vietnam Electricity called on the public to adopt energy conservation measures, particularly during the peak summer months, to contribute to a more sustainable energy future.

The event, organized by the Hà Nội Department of Industry, the State Agency for Technology Innovation, and AT Media, was supported by GIZ and the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP). Nguyễn Ngọc Thúy, National Coordinator of ETP, highlighted the importance of public awareness in driving Việt Nam’s green transition. “ETP is committed to supporting Việt Nam in raising public awareness on green transition and sustainable development,” she said. “The strong public engagement in Earth Hour each year demonstrates the power of collective action. ETP is currently leading a local campaign to raise awareness of the just energy transition among Vietnamese communities.”

With thousands of participants, Earth Hour 2025 showcased the vital need for energy conservation and environmental protection, inspiring continued efforts toward building a sustainable future for Vietnam and the world.
