DHL Halts High-Value B2C Shipments to U.S. Over New Customs Rules

Berlin, April 21, 2025 – The Europe Today: German express delivery company DHL has announced that, effective April 21, it will suspend shipments of goods from business clients to individual customers in the United States if the shipment value exceeds $800.

According to media reports, the decision comes in response to new U.S. customs regulations, which now mandate official customs clearance for goods valued above $800—a threshold previously set at $2,500. The revised rules significantly increase the administrative burden on shippers, requiring more detailed declarations about the contents and origin of the goods, and in some cases, the acquisition of special licenses.

DHL cited the complexity and cost associated with the new requirements as key reasons for the suspension. The process of verifying and clearing such shipments is expected to require additional time and resources, which the company indicated could impact service efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The logistics group emphasized that the new restriction applies exclusively to business-to-consumer (B2C) shipments. Movements of goods between companies (B2B) will continue as normal, although DHL noted that delays may still occur due to the heightened scrutiny under the new regulations.

DHL’s announcement underscores the growing impact of regulatory shifts on global logistics operations, particularly for international e-commerce and cross-border trade.
