Los Angeles, March 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: A United Airlines flight bound for New Jersey was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after departing from Los Angeles on Monday following reports of an engine fire, aviation authorities confirmed.
United Airlines Flight 2127 departed from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at approximately 10:15 a.m., according to media reports. About an hour into the journey, the aircraft turned back due to a problem with its left engine, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.
In a separate statement, United Airlines confirmed that Flight 2127 safely returned to Los Angeles to address the engine issue. The airline said passengers exited the aircraft using emergency slides and airstairs before being transported by bus back to the terminal.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was carrying 256 passengers and 12 crew members at the time of the incident. United Airlines confirmed that no injuries were reported among those on board. The FAA did not specify the exact nature of the issue affecting the left engine.
Video footage circulating on social media showed smoke emerging from one of the aircraft’s engines while firefighters sprayed water into it on the tarmac as a precautionary measure.
The aircraft had been en route to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey before it turned back. The FAA said the incident is currently under investigation.
Passengers were later transferred to another aircraft arranged by United Airlines to continue their journey to Newark.
“We are grateful to our pilots and flight attendants for their quick actions to keep our customers safe,” the airline said in a statement.
