Washington, April 30, 2025 – The Europe Today: U.S. President Donald Trump extended his congratulations to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney following the latter’s recent electoral victory, according to a statement released by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office.
The two leaders spoke by phone and underscored the importance of continued cooperation between Canada and the United States as “independent, sovereign nations,” the statement said. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing shared interests for the mutual benefit of their citizens.
“To that end, the leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future,” the statement added, highlighting the intention to deepen bilateral engagement amid evolving geopolitical and trade dynamics.
The call came in the wake of Canada’s federal election held on Monday, in which the Liberal Party, led by Carney, secured a strong mandate for another four-year term. The win marked a significant reaffirmation of public support for Carney’s leadership, particularly amid complex challenges such as U.S. tariff policies and recent tensions surrounding cross-border issues.
According to preliminary results from Elections Canada, the Liberal Party captured 43.5% of the national vote, translating to 169 seats in the 343-member House of Commons. Although the party fell short of the 172 seats required for an outright majority, it remains well-positioned to form a stable government.
The main opposition Conservative Party received 41.4% of the vote, securing 144 seats. The results suggest a continued plurality for the Liberals, who are expected to lead Canada for a fourth consecutive term, having last won a parliamentary majority in 2015.
Prime Minister Carney’s projected return to power reflects continued voter confidence in his economic stewardship and foreign policy approach, even as Canada navigates complex relations with its southern neighbor.
Details of the upcoming bilateral meeting between Trump and Carney are expected to be announced in due course.
