Astana, May 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Tô Lâm held a high-level meeting with Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Maulen Ashimbayev, on the evening of May 5 in Astana, as part of his ongoing state visit to Kazakhstan.
Chairman Ashimbayev warmly welcomed General Secretary Tô Lâm, his spouse, and the accompanying Vietnamese delegation, and extended congratulations on Vietnam’s successful celebration of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification. He emphasized the historic significance of this being the first visit by a Vietnamese Party General Secretary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1992.
Ashimbayev highlighted the importance Kazakhstan places on its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, describing the Southeast Asian nation as a reliable and strategic partner. Recalling President Hồ Chí Minh’s visit to Kazakhstan in 1959, he expressed hope that this visit would continue the tradition of strong bilateral ties and open new avenues for cooperation.
General Secretary Lâm expressed gratitude for Kazakhstan’s past support for Vietnam during its national liberation struggle and ongoing development efforts. He noted that the visit comes at a historically significant time as Vietnam celebrates the 50th anniversary of its reunification and Kazakhstan commemorates the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism—events that shaped both nations’ destinies.
Lâm congratulated Kazakhstan on its achievements under the leadership of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and other senior leaders, praising their strategic vision for the country’s socio-economic growth and rising global influence. He affirmed Vietnam’s desire to exchange development experiences and strengthen bilateral ties, positioning the partnership as a bridge between Europe and Asia and contributing to regional and global peace, cooperation, and development.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the robust growth in political relations and regular exchanges of delegations at various levels. They underscored the importance of parliamentary cooperation as a key pillar of the bilateral relationship and welcomed the substantial progress made in legislative collaboration through both bilateral initiatives and multilateral forums.
The leaders acknowledged positive developments in economic, trade, and investment cooperation, alongside significant accomplishments in other areas. General Secretary Lâm affirmed that with shared development aspirations and considerable potential, Vietnam and Kazakhstan are well-positioned to elevate their partnership to new heights.
Chairman Ashimbayev lauded Vietnam’s exceptional socio-economic progress and noted that the evolving stature of bilateral relations demonstrates a strategic and dynamic partnership—especially timely as both countries enter new development phases amid a rapidly changing international landscape.
The Senate Chairman affirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to actively supporting and advancing the implementation of cooperation initiatives agreed upon by the leaders of both countries. Stressing the vital role of inter-parliamentary relations, both sides agreed to promote exchanges and collaboration between the Senate of Kazakhstan and Vietnam’s National Assembly.
They also agreed to enhance coordination in monitoring and expediting the execution of bilateral agreements, while boosting cooperation in personnel training, policy-making, Party building, and youth exchanges to foster greater mutual understanding.
On this occasion, General Secretary Tô Lâm conveyed an invitation from National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn to Chairman Ashimbayev to visit Vietnam at a convenient time. In response, Ashimbayev also extended an invitation to Chairman Mẫn to visit Kazakhstan, further cementing the growing ties between the two nations.
