President Prabowo Inaugurates Forel and Terubuk Oil Fields

Jakarta, May 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto on Friday officially inaugurated the Forel and Terubuk oil fields located in Natuna District, Riau Islands Province, describing them as vital components in the nation’s pursuit of energy self-sufficiency.

Speaking via video conference from the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, President Prabowo hailed the launch of the two oil fields as a significant milestone. “These two projects mark historical milestones in our collective efforts to achieve national self-sufficiency in energy,” he stated.

The President emphasized that achieving energy independence is crucial not only for strengthening Indonesia’s economic foundation but also for enhancing national resilience. He noted that self-reliance in the energy sector would allow the country to save tens of billions of US dollars and prevent the outflow of hundreds of trillions of rupiah, contributing to a more robust and sovereign economy.

“A country’s ability to independently meet its energy needs is as vital as attaining food self-sufficiency,” President Prabowo affirmed. “If a country achieves self-sufficiency both in food and energy, it becomes a nation powerful enough to deter others. Such a nation tends to stand resilient in any circumstances.”

President Prabowo also expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of stakeholders involved in the development of the new oil fields, specifically acknowledging the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas), and Medco Energy.

Speaking from the inauguration site in Natuna, ESDM Minister Bahlil Lahadalia reported that the Forel and Terubuk oil fields are capable of producing 20,000 barrels of oil per day. He also noted the block’s potential to generate 60 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day.

“These resources will significantly contribute to our national energy output,” Minister Bahlil said. He further highlighted that the operation of these oil fields is aligned with Indonesia’s strategic goal of lifting one million barrels of oil per day within the next four to five years.

The inauguration of the Forel and Terubuk fields marks another step forward in Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening domestic energy production, reducing dependence on imports, and building long-term energy security.
