Türkiye’s First Floating Natural Gas Production Platform ‘Osman Gazi’ Arrives at Filyos Port

Zonguldak, June 1, 2025 – The Europe Today: Marking a milestone in Türkiye’s energy sector, the country’s first floating natural gas production platform, Osman Gazi, arrived on Saturday at Filyos Port in Zonguldak on the Black Sea coast.

The arrival follows a ceremonial send-off on May 29—the 572nd anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul—from the Presidential Dolmabahçe Office in Istanbul. The launch ceremony was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, and the platform passed through the Istanbul Strait en route to its operational site.

Equipped with advanced processing capabilities, Osman Gazi can handle up to 10.5 million cubic metres of natural gas per day, with a transfer capacity of 10 million cubic metres. Once operational, the platform is expected to double natural gas production in the Black Sea region to 20 million cubic metres daily, significantly contributing to Türkiye’s domestic energy supply.

Officials estimate that the gas produced by Osman Gazi will be sufficient to meet the annual natural gas needs of approximately 8 million households. The platform will remain in operation at its designated offshore site for 20 years, supporting Türkiye’s long-term energy security and reducing dependency on foreign sources.

The floating facility spans 298.5 metres in length, 56 metres in width, and 29.5 metres in depth, and has the capacity to accommodate 140 personnel onboard.

The platform is expected to commence operations by mid-2026, aligning with Türkiye’s broader strategy to accelerate energy independence, expand offshore resource development, and harness the full potential of its Black Sea gas reserves.

In a statement during the send-off ceremony, President Erdoğan hailed the Osman Gazi platform as a symbol of national determination and technological progress, underlining the government’s commitment to utilizing domestic resources for sustainable economic growth.

The deployment of Osman Gazi reinforces Türkiye’s position in the regional energy landscape and represents a strategic leap forward in the country’s ambition to become an energy hub connecting East and West.
