Turkish Artefacts Featured in Major Cybele Exhibition at Rome’s Colosseum Park

Rome, June 8, 2025 – The Europe Today: Three artefacts and one replica from Türkiye are currently showcased at a prestigious international exhibition in Rome, underscoring Türkiye’s cultural presence and historical legacy on the global stage. The announcement was made by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums on Friday.

The exhibition, titled “Cybele – Magna Mater Idaea tra Roma, Tunisi e il Mediterraneo”, opened on Thursday and is hosted by the Colosseum Archaeological Park in collaboration with Tunisia’s National Heritage Institute. It explores the cult and cultural significance of Cybele, the ancient Anatolian mother goddess, across the Mediterranean.

The Turkish ministry emphasized that the inclusion of Turkish artefacts in this internationally renowned venue—visited by millions each year—represents a valuable opportunity to promote Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage and reinforce historical ties with Italy.

A total of 92 artefacts are displayed at the exhibition, including:

  • 30 from various Italian museums
  • 3 from the Vatican
  • 4 from Greece
  • 2 from the United States
  • 1 each from Germany and Denmark
  • 5 from Bulgaria
  • 10 from Belgium

The exhibition also features items excavated from the ancient city of Zama in Tunisia, further enriching the Mediterranean narrative woven around the goddess Cybele.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until 5 November, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the cross-cultural and spiritual influence of Cybele from Asia Minor to Rome and beyond.
