France ‘Determined’ to Recognize State of Palestine, Affirms Foreign Minister Barrot

Paris, June 14, 2025 – The Europe Today: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Friday reaffirmed France’s steadfast commitment to recognizing the State of Palestine, emphasizing the urgent need for a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and calling on the international community to intensify efforts for peace and regional stability.

Speaking at the civil society event “Paris Call for the Two-State Solution, Peace and Regional Security”, hosted by the Paris Peace Forum, Barrot stated unequivocally, “France will uphold the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination by recognizing the State of Palestine.”

Reiterating France’s position amid ongoing developments in the region, Barrot stressed, “Whatever the recent developments in the region, France is determined to do so.”

He announced that the upcoming UN-backed conference on the two-state solution — co-organized by France and Saudi Arabia and scheduled to take place in New York later this month — would focus on advancing a political solution that includes the establishment of a viable Palestinian state with renewed governance and robust security guarantees for both Israelis and Palestinians.

“The two-state solution, to which we remain firmly committed — a condition for peace and security in the region, and a requirement under international law — is now facing existential threats,” Barrot warned, pointing to a range of escalating issues including unilateral actions on the ground, accelerated settlement expansion, prospects of annexation, growing animosity, and the breakdown of the peace process.

Barrot also made a strong humanitarian appeal, urging an “immediate ceasefire,” the “unconditional release of all hostages,” and the “massive and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.” He emphasized that the ongoing war in Gaza has resulted in a devastating toll on civilians, saying, “Too many have already paid the price of a conflict that has gone on for far too long. We owe them our compassion, and every minute should be dedicated to achieving a ceasefire.”

Calling for “courage” and “strong mobilization” from the international community, the French Foreign Minister stressed the urgency of reviving the path to peace through decisive diplomatic engagement and respect for international law.

The event in Paris brought together diplomats, civil society leaders, and peace advocates committed to promoting the long-sought two-state solution as the only viable path to a just and lasting peace in the region.
