Vietnam’s National Assembly Unanimously Approves Law on Participation in UN Peacekeeping Operations

Hanoi, June 27, 2025 – The Europe Today: The National Assembly of Việt Nam, in a historic move, unanimously approved the Law on Participation in United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Operations during its session on Thursday afternoon, with all 445 deputies present voting in favour.

The newly passed law, structured into five chapters and 27 articles, is set to take effect on January 1, 2026. It lays the legal foundation for Việt Nam’s continued and expanded involvement in UN peacekeeping missions, marking a significant step in institutionalising the country’s international responsibilities and contributions to global peace and security.

The legislation defines the fundamental principles, roles, functions, and operational frameworks for Việt Nam’s peacekeeping forces, which are authorised State contingents participating in UN missions. These forces are tasked with upholding and contributing to peace and security in line with Việt Nam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation, and development, along with the principle of multilateralisation and diversification of international relations.

Key provisions in the law detail the deployment of forces, mechanisms for international cooperation, resource allocation, and the roles and responsibilities of relevant agencies, organisations, and individuals. The law affirms Việt Nam’s commitment to strengthening its international presence and prestige while ensuring full compliance with both domestic laws and UN regulations.

The law also strictly prohibits any abuse of peacekeeping activities for purposes contrary to national or international interests. It bans acts of corruption, bribery, coercion, and all forms of discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, or social background within the scope of peacekeeping operations. Additionally, the dissemination of false information, unauthorised disclosure of State secrets or confidential UN materials, and any violations of Vietnamese or UN laws during missions are explicitly forbidden.

Also during the afternoon session, the National Assembly conducted deliberations on the draft Law on Transfer of Sentenced Persons, indicating continued legislative efforts to enhance legal frameworks aligned with international standards and obligations.

The adoption of this peacekeeping law underscores Việt Nam’s long-term commitment to global peace efforts and reinforces its role as a responsible and proactive member of the international community.
