Shusha, July 18, 2025 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the historic Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque during their official tour of the city of Shusha on Wednesday.
During the visit, Chairman Berdimuhamedov was briefed on the extensive damage inflicted on Shusha’s religious and historical heritage sites during the Armenian occupation. It was noted that of the 17 mosques that once stood in Shusha, 16 were destroyed or severely desecrated. The Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, a prominent symbol of Islamic architecture and Azerbaijani cultural heritage, was among those targeted by acts of vandalism.
Following the liberation of Shusha in 2020, comprehensive restoration efforts were promptly launched under the direct instructions of President Ilham Aliyev. Restoration of the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque commenced in late 2021 under the auspices of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The project aimed to restore the mosque’s original architectural splendor while preserving its historical integrity.
After two years of meticulous reconstruction, the mosque was officially reopened on May 10, 2023. The reopening ceremony was attended by President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, and their family members, reflecting the national significance of the site.
The Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, listed as a monument of national historical and cultural importance, stands today not only as a symbol of religious reverence but also as a testament to Azerbaijan’s dedication to preserving and revitalizing its cultural heritage in liberated territories.
The visit by President Aliyev and Chairman Berdimuhamedov underscores the enduring fraternal ties between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and highlights their shared commitment to protecting and honoring Islamic and cultural values.
