Party Chief Tô Lâm Emphasizes Building a Politically Strong Military

Hanoi, July 24, 2025 – The Europe Today: Party General Secretary Tô Lâm has underscored the importance of building a politically strong and ideologically unified military that remains deeply connected with the people, identifying it as a cornerstone for enhancing the overall quality and combat strength of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA).

The top leader made the remarks during a working session on Wednesday with the General Department of Politics of the VPA, where he also praised the department’s contributions to national defence, political stability, and the implementation of the Party’s key directives.

During the meeting, General Trịnh Văn Quyết, head of the department, presented a comprehensive report on the outcomes of the Party and political work conducted in the first half of 2025. The report highlighted key achievements, including improved quality and effectiveness of political education and ideological leadership, strict adherence to directives from the Party Central Committee and Central Military Commission, and dissemination of major policy reforms—especially related to the ongoing national administrative restructuring.

The General Department of Politics has also played a central role in defending the ideological foundation of the Party and contributing to major national political, military, and foreign affairs missions.

Looking ahead, the department is expected to proactively conduct strategic research and forecasting to advise the Party on building a politically robust military. It will continue efforts to unify the armed forces in ideology and action, implement breakthrough directives of the Party, and support the modernisation of the military.

In his address, General Secretary Tô Lâm stressed the strategic importance of the General Department of Politics, noting its responsibility for all Party and political work within the armed forces and its vital role in shaping the military’s organisational and operational framework.

On behalf of the Party, State, and Central Military Commission, he lauded the department’s accomplishments in recent years and particularly its performance during the first half of 2025.

In the context of evolving geopolitical challenges and the emergence of new warfare environments, the Party chief urged the department to further refine its advisory role and proposals to strengthen the Party’s leadership over the military and national defence. This, he said, remains both a fundamental task and a guiding principle for building the People’s Army.

He called for reinforcing the authority of the Central Military Commission to ensure swift, unified, and effective direction of defence and military tasks throughout the political system.

Party General Secretary Tô Lâm also stressed the importance of instilling strong political and spiritual will among military personnel, enabling them to confidently and effectively respond to any threat with mastery of Vietnamese military strategy and unwavering determination.

He urged the department to continue developing its institutional strength, focusing on building a high-quality and ethical corps of officers capable of fulfilling its strategic advisory role in Party and political affairs.

Furthermore, the department must strengthen the role of military judicial bodies, enhance communication through military press agencies, and contribute to the prevention and fight against corruption, waste, and misconduct within the armed forces.

General Secretary Tô Lâm also instructed the department to play a leading role in advising the Central Military Commission on the successful organisation of Party congresses at all levels, ensuring that decisions and policies are practical, effective, and rooted in the Party’s leadership principles.

Concluding his remarks, the Party leader expressed firm confidence that, with 80 years of proud tradition and under the absolute leadership of the Party Central Committee, Politburo, and Secretariat—as well as the direct leadership of the Central Military Commission—the General Department of Politics will continue to uphold its pivotal role in Party and political work within the Vietnam People’s Army.
