Ankara, The Europe Today – August 6, 2025: A newly established Turkish parliamentary body, officially titled the “National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Committee,” held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday at the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) as part of the nation’s broader strategy to eliminate terrorism and promote unity, democracy, and the rule of law under the “Terror-Free Türkiye” initiative.
Addressing the session, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, who chairs the committee, underscored the historical significance of the moment.
“There are moments in the history of nations that not only shape the day they occur but also determine the future of those nations. Today is one of those moments. We are at a historic turning point,” he said.
Speaker Kurtulmuş emphasized that just as the Turkish nation has historically united in the face of past challenges, it will now confront and overcome terrorism with unwavering determination, faith, and national solidarity. He reiterated that the brotherhood between Turks and Kurds is an inseparable component of the country’s national identity and shared geography.
“This process is a matter of national survival that concerns the shared future of Turks, Kurds, and citizens from all walks of life. Therefore, our commission will act as a deliberative body rooted in negotiation. I firmly believe that our commission will fulfill this historic mission with a spirit of national unity and brotherhood,” he added.
According to an official statement published via the Turkish parliament’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the committee’s mandate includes:
- Eliminating terrorism from Türkiye
- Strengthening national unity and social cohesion
- Reinforcing democratic values, freedom, and the rule of law
- Identifying legal reforms and drafting legislative proposals
- Engaging the public and ensuring transparency throughout the process
The committee will act as a key stakeholder in this critical period, monitoring developments closely and working to secure lasting peace in Türkiye. It will also serve as a platform for inclusive dialogue, ensuring that voices from all segments of society are considered in shaping the country’s future.
The body will convene with an absolute majority of its members, while legislation drafting will require a three-fifths majority. Other decisions may be made by a simple majority of those present. The committee’s initial mandate will extend until December 31, 2025, with provisions for two-month extensions upon the approval of three-fifths of all members.
The next session is scheduled for Friday, during which key government and intelligence officials — including Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, and National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Chief İbrahim Kalın — will provide briefings on the current security landscape and institutional efforts aligned with the committee’s objectives.
All official communications regarding the committee’s work will be issued exclusively through the office of the Parliament Speaker, reflecting the body’s high-level oversight and national significance.
The formation of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Committee marks a strategic and symbolic step in Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to safeguard national security, advance inclusive democracy, and lay the groundwork for enduring peace across the nation.
