Ottawa, August 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced an investment of more than $9 billion to enhance the capabilities and support of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), ensuring they are equipped to protect Canadians and uphold the country’s commitments worldwide.
The funding is part of Canada’s strategic effort to meet NATO’s 2% defence spending target this year, with plans to allocate 5% of annual GDP to defence by 2035.
In a significant move, the Prime Minister also revealed that all CAF members will receive the largest pay raise in a generation.
Speaking at a military base, Prime Minister Carney outlined the scope of the initiative, stating, “Our plan includes modernising military equipment, building up Canada’s defence industry, diversifying international partnerships, and investing in dual-use infrastructure – such as airports, ports, telecom, and emergency systems – that support both defence and civilian readiness.”
