Ankara, August 11, 2025 – The Europe Today: A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck western Türkiye late Sunday, causing significant structural damage and casualties.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), the quake was centered in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province and occurred at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles).
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that an 81-year-old citizen died after being rescued from a collapsed building. Twenty-nine others were injured, though none are reported to be in life-threatening condition.
Preliminary assessments indicate that 16 buildings across 68 neighborhoods collapsed due to the main tremor and subsequent aftershocks.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended his condolences to the victims and their families, assuring that he would closely monitor developments in the affected areas.
