Morocco Rises to Fourth Place in Global Blueberry Exports

Rabat, August 12, 2025 – The Europe Today: Morocco has advanced from seventh to fourth place in the global blueberry export rankings within a year, exporting a record 83,000 tons in 2024, according to agricultural platform Agraria Pe.

This marks a dramatic increase from just 636 tons in 2009, reflecting an average annual growth rate of 43%. Agraria Pe attributed the success to Morocco’s combination of natural advantages, advanced farming techniques, and targeted investments, which have positioned the country as a competitive and rapidly growing player in the global market.

Morocco’s favorable climate — with mild winters, warm dry summers, and fertile, well-drained soils in regions such as Souss and Oriental — allows for multiple harvests annually, producing high-quality fruit with excellent taste and firmness. The country’s proximity to Europe enables fresh blueberries to reach markets such as Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany swiftly, reducing costs and ensuring product freshness.

The industry has evolved from a small-scale crop in the 1990s into a highly organized, export-oriented sector. Significant investments in modern agricultural technology and expansion into new production areas, including Dakhla and the Atlas Mountains, are expected to extend the harvest season and boost supply for existing and emerging markets.

Globally, blueberry exports totaled one million tons in 2024, valued at approximately $6.73 billion. Peru led with 31% of global exports, followed by Chile, Spain, Morocco (8%), and the United States (7%).

With continued sector growth and increasing professionalism among local exporters, Morocco is expected to further strengthen its position in Europe and expand into markets across Asia and the Middle East.
