Bulgarian President Radev Welcomes Alaska Talks as Step Toward Peace, Criticizes Government Policies

Sofia, August 18, 2025 – The Europe Today: Bulgarian President Rumen Radev described the Alaska talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as a step that “restores dialogue and revives the hope for peace.”

Speaking during his visit to the “Petrova Niva” area above Malko Tarnovo, where the country marked the 122nd anniversary of the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising in Edirne Thrace, Radev cautioned that the summit’s outcome may trigger significant political changes, including within Bulgaria itself.

He criticized Bulgaria’s political leadership, arguing that they remain entrenched in the belief that peace can be imposed by force — a notion he said has only led to destruction, victims in Ukraine, and the loss of more territory.

Turning his remarks toward domestic issues, Radev accused the government of distracting the public with manufactured scandals to conceal its inability to tackle key challenges such as inflation control, the budget deficit, and the management of state assets. He raised pointed questions about the rapid introduction of the euro, the growing fiscal gap, and the decision to pressure banks into paying advance taxes for 2026.

Radev also questioned government procurement practices and privileges granted to certain politicians, particularly members of parliament receiving special security protections at home and abroad.

Responding to accusations by former prime minister Boyko Borissov that he was acting in coordination with opposition parties, Radev dismissed the claims, instead emphasizing the need for clarity, transparency, and accountability.

At the core of his statement, President Radev reiterated that the Alaska summit should be viewed as an opportunity to revive dialogue and pursue a “just and lasting peace.”
