President Ilham Aliyev Meets European Leaders; Talks Focus on Peace, Energy, and Regional Connectivity

Copenhagen, October 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held a meeting with President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the 7th European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen.

During the discussions, Costa and von der Leyen congratulated President Aliyev on the achievements made in Washington regarding the peace agenda between Armenia and Azerbaijan. They expressed hope that the progress would serve as a foundation for ensuring lasting peace in the region, reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to supporting future peace efforts. The two leaders also underlined the importance of strengthening transport connectivity in the region as a priority area for the EU.

The talks further highlighted Azerbaijan’s key role in Europe’s energy security. It was noted that, following the strategic energy partnership agreement signed between Azerbaijan and the European Union in 2022, Azerbaijan has significantly increased its gas exports to European markets.

President Aliyev expressed gratitude for the congratulations, emphasizing that the achievements of the peace agenda carry historical significance for both Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as for the wider region. He underlined that both countries have adapted to peaceful coexistence and reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s determination to continue advancing the peace process.

The Azerbaijani leader reported that Azerbaijani gas is currently being supplied to 10 European countries, including eight EU member states, describing this as a substantial contribution to the EU’s energy security. He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s pivotal role in the development of the Middle Corridor, citing progress in transport and logistics infrastructure and a rising volume of shipments from Central Asia transiting through Azerbaijani territory.

The meeting concluded with both sides noting the promising opportunities to further enhance and elevate relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.
