Trump Terminates All Trade Negotiations with Canada

Washington, October 24, 2025 — The Europe Today: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries after a controversial advertisement aired by a Canadian province.

In a post on the social-media platform Truth Social, President Trump stated, “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

The move follows a dispute sparked by an advertisement produced by the province of Ontario, which featured a voice-over of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs for undermining American jobs and triggering trade wars. The use of Reagan’s likeness—widely revered among Republicans—reportedly angered the U.S. president. Ontario Premier Doug Ford confirmed that the advertisement had drawn the attention of the U.S. leader.

Relations between the United States and Canada have already been strained this year after President Trump imposed new import tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, and automobiles, prompting retaliatory trade measures from Ottawa. Despite several rounds of negotiations aimed at resolving disputes in the steel and aluminium sectors, discussions have now been suspended indefinitely.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated that Canada would not allow “unfair U.S. access” to its domestic markets if trade negotiations collapse. The United States, Canada, and Mexico are scheduled to review their continent-wide free trade agreement in the coming year, a process that may now face additional complications.

The abrupt suspension of trade talks signals a new and confrontational phase in U.S. trade policy under the Trump administration, which has raised tariffs to their highest levels since the 1930s and increasingly used trade restrictions as a tool of political leverage.
