Baku, December 8, 2025 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, held extensive discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on December 8, focusing on a wide-ranging bilateral and multilateral cooperation agenda, as well as regional and global developments.
The talks began with a one-on-one meeting between the two ministers, followed by an expanded session attended by delegations from both sides.
According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, the ministers reaffirmed that relations between Azerbaijan and Iran are rooted in the principles of good neighborliness, mutual respect, and the two peoples’ shared historical, cultural, and religious ties.
Both sides underscored the significance of the friendly relations between the Presidents of the two countries, noting that the Iranian President’s visit to Azerbaijan in 2025 and his meetings with the Azerbaijani President had provided fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation.
The ministers highlighted the constructive role of political and consular consultations between the two foreign ministries, the Azerbaijan–Iran State Commission on economic, trade, and humanitarian cooperation, and active inter-parliamentary exchanges. They stressed that these mechanisms, along with a robust bilateral legal framework, have supported the sustainable development of relations.
During the talks, the two sides reviewed cooperation in key sectors, including the economy, trade, energy, transport, and logistics. They noted that the countries’ economic potential and geographical proximity offer favorable conditions for expanding mutual trade and investment.
Both ministers expressed confidence that joint efforts under the North-South International Transport Corridor, as well as new connectivity projects linking Azerbaijan’s East Zangezur economic region with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, would further enhance regional transit capacity. They also praised the progress in constructing the road and bridge between Aghband and Kalala.
In discussing humanitarian cooperation, the ministers noted that increased flights on the Baku–Tehran–Baku and Baku–Tabriz–Baku routes, based on an agreement between the two Presidents, have strengthened people-to-people ties. They also explored prospects for expanding collaboration in science, education, culture, youth, sports, healthcare, and tourism.
The discussions further covered cooperation within international and regional organizations, including the United Nations, UNESCO, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). Both sides also emphasized constructive engagement within the 3+3 regional platform and other cooperative mechanisms.
Minister Bayramov briefed his Iranian counterpart on recent developments in the Azerbaijan–Armenia normalization process and the outcomes of the Washington Summit. He stressed the importance of Armenia removing territorial claims against Azerbaijan from its constitution to achieve lasting regional peace. He also outlined Azerbaijan’s reconstruction efforts in liberated territories, the ongoing threat of landmines, and the resettlement of internally displaced persons.
Following the meetings, the two ministers delivered press statements summarizing the outcomes of their discussions and responded to questions from journalists.
