Türkiye Warns of Possible Genocide Amid Gaza Crisis, Calls for Global Action

Türkiye

New York, December 10, 2025 – The Europe Today: Türkiye’s counsellor at the United Nations, Gulsah Cumurcu Kader, on Tuesday warned that the international community is witnessing “grave atrocities that may amount to genocide,” emphasizing that the ongoing situation in the Gaza Strip serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for prevention.

Speaking at a high-level UN meeting commemorating the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide, Kader highlighted that the pledge of “never again” following the Holocaust remains a guiding principle, yet the world continues to witness severe violations that may constitute genocide.

She described Gaza as “a somber reminder and a wake-up call,” underscoring the importance of learning from history to prevent the repetition of such tragedies.

Kader stressed that all actions must be guided by international law, noting that the 1948 Genocide Convention “clearly defines the narrow legal term of genocide” and that only a competent court can determine whether such a crime has been committed. She urged states to avoid politicizing the term while warning of the growing threats of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, discrimination, and intolerance globally.

“There should be no impunity for the gross violations of international law such as those witnessed in Gaza,” Kader said, adding that accountability is crucial for prevention. She also highlighted the importance of recognizing early warning signals and called for stronger coordination within the UN system to uphold the promise of “never again.”
