Azerbaijan State Pantomime Theater Presents “Romeo and Juliet” in Baku

Azerbaijan

Baku, December 29, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Azerbaijan State Pantomime Theater staged a production of Romeo and Juliet, inspired by the motifs of William Shakespeare’s world-renowned classical drama, offering audiences a modern and symbolic interpretation of the timeless tragedy.

Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, head of the IDEA Public Union Leyla Aliyeva, and Alena Aliyeva attended the performance.

Through expressive plastic movements and symbolic stage solutions, the production depicted the eternal confrontation between Life and Death, presenting Shakespeare’s classic narrative in a distinctive pantomime form. The 55-minute performance conveyed the emotional depth and philosophical essence of the drama without spoken dialogue, relying instead on visual language and movement.

The production was realized through the creative vision of Jeyhun Dadashov, who served as both stage designer and composer, shaping the performance’s visual aesthetics and musical atmosphere.

The cast included Honored Artists Bahruz Ahmadli and Sabina Hajiyeva, as well as actors Elnur Ismayilov, Ali Alizada, Nurida Musabeyli, and other members of the theater troupe, whose performances brought renewed vitality to the classic story.

The staging of Romeo and Juliet once again underscored the Azerbaijan State Pantomime Theater’s commitment to reinterpreting classical dramaturgy through a contemporary plastic and artistic language, contributing to the ongoing development of innovative theatrical expression in Azerbaijan.
