Baku, January 12, 2026 – The Europe Today: President Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday highlighted the serious challenges posed by heavy rainfall to urban transport systems, noting that intense downpours often lead to the paralysis of city transport and the emergence of major infrastructure problems.
The remarks were made during a meeting dedicated to the State Program for the Improvement of Water Supply, Wastewater, and Stormwater Systems in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula for 2026–2035.
“As soon as heavy rain falls, urban transport becomes paralyzed, and very serious problems arise. True, this is not only in Baku or Azerbaijan,” President Aliyev stated, underscoring that the issue is a common challenge faced by major cities worldwide.
The head of state emphasized that, within the framework of the new state program, a modern rainwater collector network will be constructed on 30 streets in Baku to ensure more effective management of stormwater. He noted that the project is aimed at preventing flooding, improving traffic flow during adverse weather conditions, and enhancing the overall resilience of the city’s infrastructure.
President Aliyev stressed that the planned measures will bring significant long-term benefits, contributing to improved urban mobility, public safety, and environmental sustainability in the capital.
The State Program for 2026–2035 is expected to play a key role in modernizing Baku’s water and wastewater systems, aligning urban infrastructure with future development needs and climate-related challenges.
