Helsinki, February 8, 2026 – The Europe Today: Severe wildfires are continuing to rage in Norway’s Trøndelag region, destroying at least two buildings and threatening nearby residential areas, authorities said on Sunday.
The first alarm was raised on Saturday at around 4 p.m. in Oksvoll, after reports that the fire may have been sparked by someone playing with a lighter. Images circulating in local media show the blaze spreading rapidly across a wide area.
According to Norwegian media outlet VG, an outbuilding and a garage have been completely destroyed by the fire. Incident commander Trond Hangås of the Trøndelag police told NRK that the fire intensified overnight, spreading in a direction that had been anticipated but was “not desired.”
Around 40 people have been evacuated from a five-kilometer area as a precaution. Authorities said several smaller fires remain uncontrolled, with strong winds significantly hampering firefighting efforts.
Emergency response teams, including rescue services, the Norwegian defense forces, and local volunteers, are actively involved in containment operations. A helicopter is expected to be deployed during the day to assist with aerial firefighting.
Oksvoll is located in the coastal municipality of Ørland, approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Trondheim.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents to follow evacuation orders and safety instructions as efforts to control the fires continue.
