Türkiye Urges Global Readiness Against Israeli Provocations, Backs Diplomacy in US-Iran Ceasefire

Türkiye

Ankara, April 10, 2026 – The Europe Today: Hakan Fidan on Thursday called on the international community to remain prepared to respond “appropriately” to any potential acts of sabotage by Israel, as a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran takes effect.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at establishing a new regional security and peace architecture. He underscored the importance of normalizing relations between Iran and Gulf countries and reaffirmed Ankara’s readiness to play an active and supportive role in the process.

Fidan welcomed the recently announced two-week ceasefire between Donald Trump and Iran, expressing hope that it would be fully implemented and potentially extended through mutual agreement. He noted that upcoming talks between Washington and Tehran, expected to begin on April 11, would address complex issues including the nuclear program, uranium enrichment, the Strait of Hormuz, and broader regional security concerns.

However, the Turkish foreign minister warned that Israel’s recent large-scale airstrikes in Lebanon—carried out shortly after the ceasefire announcement—constituted a serious provocation that could undermine the negotiation process. He accused Tel Aviv of extending its military actions from Gaza into Lebanon, resulting in civilian casualties.

Fidan stressed that the Middle East is passing through a highly sensitive and dangerous phase, urging regional actors to resolve disputes through dialogue, respect for sovereignty, and enhanced cooperation rather than external intervention. He added that Syria must be shielded from the spillover effects of regional tensions, reiterating Türkiye’s continued support for the country’s stabilization, reconstruction, and national reconciliation efforts.

On Gaza, Fidan called on the international community not to lose sight of the ongoing humanitarian crisis. He highlighted persistent challenges in implementing the first phase of the Gaza peace plan, including insufficient humanitarian aid, instability at border crossings such as Rafah, and delays in establishing administrative mechanisms.

Referring to recent diplomatic engagements, Fidan noted that Hamas had largely fulfilled its initial commitments, while concerns remain over Israel’s adherence to agreed terms. He added that further negotiations are expected to resume in Cairo, with efforts ongoing to advance to the next phase of the peace process.

Reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to diplomacy, Fidan said Ankara continues to coordinate closely with international partners to sustain dialogue despite ongoing provocations.

The ceasefire initiative was announced earlier this week by President Donald Trump, following Iran’s presentation of a proposed framework for negotiations, raising cautious hopes for de-escalation in the region.
