Legendary Indian Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away at 92

Mumbai, April 12, 2026 – The Europe Today: Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists in modern Indian music, has passed away at the age of 92.

According to family sources, the veteran singer was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday after suffering from cardiac and respiratory complications. She had reportedly been unwell for several months and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where she was placed in the intensive care unit. Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed her demise on Sunday afternoon. The last rites are scheduled to be held tomorrow.

Born in 1933 into the illustrious Mangeshkar family, Asha Bhosle began her musical journey at the age of nine and recorded her first film song in 1943. Over the decades, she rose to become one of the most prolific and celebrated voices in Indian cinema, with a career spanning more than seven decades. Her stature in Hindi film music was rivalled only by her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar.

Initially known for singing cabaret and dance numbers, Bhosle later demonstrated remarkable versatility by excelling in various genres, including classical-based songs and ghazals. Her acclaimed performances in films such as Umrao Jaan and Ijaazat earned her multiple accolades, including seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and two National Film Awards.

In her personal life, Asha Bhosle married Ganpatrao Bhosle at a young age, though the marriage ended in separation in 1960. She later married renowned composer Rahul Dev Barman in 1980, a partnership that became one of the most celebrated collaborations in Indian music. Barman passed away in 1994.

Even in her later years, Bhosle remained connected to music, often reflecting on the evolving landscape of the industry while maintaining her deep appreciation for classical compositions and timeless melodies.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren, including her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, who remained a close companion in her final years.

Asha Bhosle’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian music, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy that continues to inspire generations of artists and music lovers worldwide.
