Hanoi, September 15, 2026 – The Europe Today: Vietnam and Thailand have agreed to further strengthen people-to-people exchanges and expand cooperation in education, culture, tourism and transport connectivity, as the two countries seek to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership.
The agreement was reached during talks between Party General Secretary and State President of Viet Nam Tô Lâm and Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua in Hanoi on Tuesday. The two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation between localities and establish more substantive connections at the provincial and municipal levels.
The Thai King and Queen are paying a state visit to Viet Nam from September 14 to 16. The visit marks the first visit by a Thai monarch to Viet Nam in 50 years, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1976. President Tô Lâm described the visit as historically significant and an important milestone in bilateral friendship, particularly following the elevation of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025.
Tô Lâm reaffirmed Viet Nam’s continued importance attached to relations with Thailand and expressed his hope that both countries would continue to support each other’s development while contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
The Thai King expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to visit Viet Nam and praised the country’s achievements in national development and efforts to improve the quality of life of its people. Both sides noted the positive evolution of bilateral relations over the past five decades, from friendly neighbourly ties to a strategic partnership in 2013 and a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2025.
The two sides agreed to continue strengthening political trust, maintaining high-level exchanges and making effective use of existing cooperation mechanisms. They also emphasized the importance of implementing the Viet Nam-Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership effectively.
Tô Lâm welcomed activities and projects supported by the Thai royal family in Vietnam, particularly in education and community development, and affirmed that Viet Nam would continue facilitating their effective implementation.
The leaders also agreed to promote cooperation in trade, investment, economic development and other areas, with the aim of benefiting both peoples and contributing to regional peace and development.
They further welcomed the Thai royal family’s attention to the Vietnamese community in Thailand and the preservation of sites associated with President Hồ Chí Minh, describing these efforts as meaningful symbols of the historical and cultural ties between the two peoples.
On regional and international issues, Vietnam and Thailand expressed support for continued coordination at multilateral forums and through regional and subregional mechanisms. Both sides also agreed to contribute to strengthening ASEAN solidarity and unity and promoting the central role of ASEAN.
