Hanoi, September 16, 2026 – The Europe Today: National Assembly President Trần Thanh Mẫn met with Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, along with members of the Thai royal delegation, in Hà Nội on Tuesday during the Thai monarch’s state visit to Việtnam.
During the meeting, the Vietnamese National Assembly President and the Thai King highlighted the similarities shared by the two countries in history, culture and social life, describing these commonalities as favourable conditions for expanding exchanges and sharing experiences.
They underscored that the close bonds between the Vietnamese and Thai peoples constitute an important foundation for the sustainable development of bilateral relations.
The two sides welcomed the growing breadth and depth of Việt Nam–Thailand cooperation, noting the significant progress achieved since bilateral ties were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2013 and subsequently upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2025.
They stressed the importance of strengthening people-to-people exchanges and agreed to promote greater interaction among localities, young people and friendship organisations, while expanding cultural, artistic, sporting and tourism exchanges.
President Mẫn and King Maha Vajiralongkorn emphasised the need to create more opportunities for young people from both countries to meet, learn from each other and gain a deeper understanding of their respective cultures, histories and bilateral relations. Such exchanges, they noted, would further strengthen the friendship cultivated between Việt Nam and Thailand over the past five decades.
The two leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in education, including exchanges among pupils, students, lecturers and scholars. President Mẫn expressed appreciation for educational and community development programmes and projects supported by the Thai royal family in Việt Nam, saying these initiatives had produced tangible benefits for local communities while contributing to greater mutual understanding between the two peoples.
Referring to the outcomes of the Thai National Assembly President’s visit to Việt Nam in August, President Mẫn expressed hope that King Maha Vajiralongkorn would continue to support cooperation between the two legislatures.
He called for continued exchanges of parliamentary delegations at all levels, stronger contacts between specialised agencies and parliamentary groups, and greater sharing of experience in legislation, oversight and policy formulation. Such cooperation, he said, could contribute to a favourable, transparent and stable legal environment for implementing agreements between the two governments and enable businesses of both countries to expand cooperation with greater confidence.
President Mẫn also proposed that the two parliaments maintain close coordination at regional and international parliamentary forums, particularly on issues of common concern, contributing to peace, cooperation and sustainable development while strengthening the role of ASEAN.
For his part, King Maha Vajiralongkorn praised the role of the Vietnamese and Thai parliaments in developing legal frameworks and creating favourable conditions for bilateral cooperation.
He noted that stronger contacts among legislative bodies, local authorities and social organisations would enable both sides to better understand the practical needs of their peoples and businesses, thereby helping promote more substantive and effective cooperation between Việt Nam and Thailand.
