Beijing, September 01, 2024, The Europe Today: The level of green development in China’s agricultural sector has seen significant progress from 2022 to 2023, according to a report released by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the China Agricultural Green Development Research Society on Saturday.
At the report’s unveiling, Ye Yujiang, Vice President of CAAS, highlighted China’s ongoing efforts to drive a comprehensive and multi-dimensional transformation towards green agriculture, with technological innovation playing a crucial role in this transition.
The report indicates that the conservation and utilization of agricultural resources in China continue to improve, bolstered by pilot demonstrations promoting green development. The emergence of new agricultural entities has further propelled the sector’s shift toward sustainability.
A key focus of China’s green agricultural strategy has been the reduction of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the comprehensive utilization of crop straw, resource management of livestock and poultry manure, and the reduction and recycling of plastic film. The report notes that the total usage of chemical fertilizers in China has maintained a downward trend for seven consecutive years, reflecting the country’s commitment to protecting and managing its agricultural environment.
China’s capacity to supply high-quality green agricultural products has also continued to strengthen. By the end of 2023, the country had established standardized production bases for green food raw materials, covering approximately 177 million mu (11.8 million hectares). The report also highlights that the qualified rate of routine monitoring on the quality and safety of agricultural products nationwide reached 97.8 percent throughout the year.
The report further notes the positive economic impact on rural residents, with the per capita disposable income of rural Chinese reaching 21,691 yuan (about 3,059 U.S. dollars) in 2023. This figure represents a 7.6 percent increase from the previous year, surpassing the growth rate of urban residents by 2.8 percentage points.
Overall, the findings underscore China’s steady progress in fostering a sustainable, green agricultural sector, with ongoing efforts to enhance resource utilization, reduce environmental impact, and improve the livelihoods of its rural population.
