Beijing, September 01, 2024, The Europe Today: The China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, recognized as the country’s first national green development demonstration zone, has unveiled new construction goals aimed at advancing comprehensive green transformation across China. These objectives are part of a broader effort to explore sustainable pathways and establish models for eco-friendly economic and social development nationwide.
The National Development and Reform Commission recently issued an implementation plan outlining these ambitious goals, which focus on fostering green, low-carbon, and high-quality development. The plan positions the eco-city to evolve into a leading national green development demonstration zone, with an emphasis on high-value-added sub-industries and the creation of a world-class business environment.
To achieve these objectives, the plan introduces 20 key indicators across three main areas, targeting internationally leading levels in major green development metrics by 2035. Additionally, it specifies 29 detailed tasks organized into six categories, alongside proposed organizational measures to ensure effective implementation.
The new construction goals highlight four primary areas of innovation:
- Accelerating the Growth of Green Industries: Promoting sustainable industrial development.
- Enhancing Scientific and Technological Innovation: Boosting research and development to support green transformation.
- Addressing Key Environmental Challenges: Tackling critical issues such as pollution and resource management.
- Improving Systems and Mechanisms: Establishing robust frameworks to support long-term sustainable growth.
Analysts have observed that these goals align closely with the broader reforms of China’s ecological conservation system, as proposed during the third plenary session of the 20th Communist Party of China Central Committee.
The China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, co-developed by China and Singapore, broke ground by the Bohai Sea in 2008. In 2013, it received State Council approval to become the nation’s first green development demonstration zone, setting a precedent for future initiatives.
Notably, the eco-city has demonstrated a “reverse urban heat island effect” for two consecutive years, a significant achievement in mitigating extreme high temperatures. According to data from the local meteorological bureau, from June to July this year, the intensity of the urban heat island effect in the eco-city was measured at minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, an improvement from the same period last year. This suggests a potential solution to the global challenge of extreme temperatures.
Zhu Liyang, president of the China Association of Circular Economy, remarked that the new construction goals reflect the high expectations of the Chinese government for the eco-city’s future. They underscore the eco-city’s national significance and its international vision in advancing green development.
China has made substantial commitments to sustainability, announcing in 2020 its intention to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. In line with these commitments, the country has recently introduced several policies to further promote green transformation.
Wang Guoliang, director of the China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City administrative committee, emphasized the eco-city’s ongoing role as a pioneer in green development. “Building on our existing advanced experience, the eco-city will continue to explore new and improved pathways, contributing valuable insights to the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development in China and beyond,” Wang stated.
