State Funeral Services Held for Former President Trần Đức Lương in National Mourning Ceremony

Hanoi, May 25, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Socialist Republic of Vietnam on Sunday morning solemnly bid farewell to former Politburo member and former State President Trần Đức Lương, a highly respected leader and an exemplary figure in studying and following President Hồ Chí Minh’s ideology, morality, and style.

A memorial service was held with full national mourning rites at the National Funeral Hall, No. 5 Trần Thánh Tông Street, Hà Nội. Simultaneously, commemorative ceremonies took place at the Reunification Hall in Hồ Chí Minh City and Hall T50 of the Military Command of Quảng Ngãi Province, the late President’s hometown.

High-Level Attendance Reflects National and International Respect

The memorial service in Hanoi was attended by Party General Secretary Tô Lâm, State President Lương Cường, and National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn. Also in attendance were former Party and State leaders, including former Party General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh, former State Presidents Trương Tấn Sang and Nguyễn Tấn Dũng, along with many current and former leaders of the Party and State.

The ceremony was also marked by the presence of international dignitaries, including Pany Yathotou, Politburo member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and Vice President of Laos, and Men Sam An, Vice President of the Cambodian People’s Party, President of the National Council of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodian Motherland, and Chairwoman of the Cambodia–Việt Nam Friendship Association.

In Hồ Chí Minh City, the event was attended by Politburo member and Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyễn Văn Nên, former State President Nguyễn Minh Triết, and numerous former and current officials of the Party, State, and Việt Nam Fatherland Front.

Meanwhile in Quảng Ngãi, leaders including Provincial Party Secretary Bùi Thị Quỳnh Vân and former State President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc joined a large number of local officials and citizens in paying their respects.

A Life Dedicated to the Nation

Delivering the funeral oration, President Lương Cường paid tribute to the late leader, highlighting his immense contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. President Lương described Trần Đức Lương as a “highly prestigious leader” and a “shining example” of President Hồ Chí Minh’s teachings.

He emphasized that former President Lương always demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility, upheld Party solidarity, and placed national interests above all else. His leadership earned widespread admiration and affection from fellow Party members, the people, and international friends alike.

With 65 years of Party membership and more than five decades of revolutionary activity, Trần Đức Lương consistently dedicated his life to the development and happiness of the nation and its people. In recognition of his lifelong service, he was conferred the Gold Star Order, the 65-year Party membership badge, and numerous prestigious awards from both Vietnam and other nations.

Concluding his remarks, President Cường affirmed the resolve of the Party, people, and armed forces to continue the path chosen by the Party, President Hồ Chí Minh, and the nation, adhering firmly to Marxism–Leninism and Hồ Chí Minh’s ideology, while carrying forward the spirit of Đổi mới (Renewal) to lead the country into a new era of strength and prosperity.

President Cường also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the entire nation.

Expressions of Gratitude from the Family

Representing the family, Trần Tuấn Anh, son of the late President, expressed deep gratitude to current and former Party and State leaders, officials from various sectors and localities, international dignitaries, diplomatic corps, and the general public for their condolences and support. He also thanked the medical personnel who cared for his father in his final days.

Following the official proceedings, leaders, dignitaries, and citizens walked in solemn procession around the casket to pay their final respects to the late President.

Final Journey to the Hometown

The casket, draped with the national flag, was then placed in a hearse and solemnly escorted through the streets of Hanoi before being transported to Nội Bài International Airport en route to Quảng Ngãi Province. The burial ceremony took place at 3 p.m. the same day in Phổ Khánh Commune, Đức Phổ Township.

A Nation in Mourning

Over the two-day national mourning period, an estimated 830 delegations comprising around 10,500 people representing ministries, sectors, organizations, local authorities, armed forces, diplomatic missions, international organizations, and the general public, came to pay homage at the three memorial sites in Hà Nội, Hồ Chí Minh City, and Quảng Ngãi.

The farewell to Trần Đức Lương marked the passing of a statesman whose life embodied the values of patriotism, integrity, and devotion to the national cause — a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
