Brussels, July 2, 2025 – The Europe Today: In a recent high-level meeting, senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, reaffirming mutual commitment to deepening China-Belgium ties and fostering stronger China-European Union (EU) cooperation.
During the meeting, Prime Minister De Wever emphasized the longstanding history of exchanges between Belgium and China, noting the active and friendly interactions that have positioned Belgium as a vital gateway for EU-China cooperation. Reflecting on his multiple visits to China, he expressed admiration for the country’s significant development achievements.
Acknowledging the current complexities in global geopolitics, De Wever stressed the importance of strengthening dialogue and building mutual trust between Europe and China, despite their differing perspectives. He reiterated Belgium’s strong support for multilateralism, the need for greater European strategic autonomy, and expressed optimism about the China-EU leaders’ meeting, hoping it would yield constructive results.
In his remarks, Wang Yi highlighted Belgium’s unique role as a founding member of the European Union and host of EU institutions, underscoring the country’s significance in the process of European integration and in advancing China-EU relations.
Wang expressed appreciation for the rational and pragmatic approach adopted by the new Belgian government toward China, and voiced China’s readiness to build on the traditional friendship with Belgium to further advance their comprehensive cooperative partnership.
He also reiterated China’s commitment to high-quality development and a high level of openness, inviting more Belgian enterprises to explore business opportunities in China. In return, he expressed hope that Belgium would offer a fair, secure, and predictable environment for Chinese companies investing in the country.
The meeting also marked the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, a milestone Wang described as a moment of profound significance that calls for both sides to build on past achievements and shape a cooperative future.
