Azerbaijan and Armenia Agree to Recognize Former USSR-Era Borders

Baku, August 11, 2025 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan and Armenia have affirmed their mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of international borders, and political independence under the “Agreement on Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia,” which was initialed by the foreign ministers of both countries.

The agreement confirms that the boundaries between the Soviet Socialist Republics of the former USSR became the international borders of the respective independent states and have been recognized as such by the international community.

This development marks a significant step towards normalizing relations between the two nations following years of tension and conflict.
