Romania Elected Full Member of UNESCO Executive Board for 2025–2029 Term

BucharestNovember 10, 2025 – The Europe Today: In a significant diplomatic achievement, Romania has been elected as a full member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Executive Board for the 2025–2029 term, marking the country’s return to the board after a 14-year absence.

The election took place on 7 November during the 43rd Session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where Romania secured 135 votes from member states, reflecting broad international support for its candidacy.

Strategic Significance

Romania’s election to the UNESCO Executive Board reaffirms its longstanding commitment to the organization’s core domains—education, science, culture, and communication. The Ministry of Education noted that the result represents international recognition of Romania’s “constant commitment to UNESCO’s values” and its active role in advancing multilateral cooperation.

By holding a seat on the Executive Board, Romania will contribute directly to shaping and implementing UNESCO’s Programme of Activities for 2026–2029, participating in decision-making processes that influence global policy in these key areas.

Key Priorities

According to official statements, Romania’s tenure on the board will prioritize:

  • Strengthening knowledge-based societies and reducing digital inclusion gaps;
  • Promoting culture as a public good and safeguarding tangible and intangible heritage;
  • Defending freedom of expression and ensuring the safety of journalists, in alignment with UNESCO’s mandate.
