Astana, January 6, 2026 – The Europe Today: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a working meeting with the participation of State Counselor Erlan Karin and Assistant to the President on Legal Issues Yerzhan Zhiyenbayev, the Akorda press service reported.
During the meeting, Erlan Karin briefed President Tokayev on the preliminary outcomes of the activities of the Working Group on Parliamentary Reform. Since the launch of the parliamentary reform initiative on the state platform e-Otinish and the Egov service, approximately 500 proposals have been received. Efforts to summarize and analyze suggestions submitted by citizens, experts, and public organizations are ongoing.
The Working Group has recently focused on issues concerning the formation of a future unicameral Parliament and the execution of its legislative functions. The next meeting of the Working Group is scheduled for January 9, 2026, during which proposals in remaining areas will be examined in detail.
State Counselor Erlan Karin also presented the results of December meetings of the working sections of the National Qurultay and updated the President on preparations for the Qurultay’s fifth session.
Emphasizing the pivotal role of parliamentary reform in the transformation of Kazakhstan’s political system and the scope of upcoming changes, President Tokayev instructed that all submitted initiatives be thoroughly reviewed and used as the basis for developing fundamental approaches to constitutional reform.
