Denmark Deploys Additional Troops to Greenland Amid Heightened Arctic Tensions

Denmark

Copenhagen, January 19, 2026 – The Europe Today: Denmark is deploying additional soldiers to Greenland as part of an ongoing buildup of military personnel in the Arctic territory, Danish media reported.

The Danish Armed Forces confirmed the deployment to broadcaster TV 2, stating that a larger contingent of combat soldiers is expected to arrive in Kangerlussuaq on Monday evening, describing the move as “a substantial contribution.” Around 100 Danish troops had already been stationed in the capital, Nuuk, with a similar number previously deployed to Kangerlussuaq.

According to Danish authorities, the forces will take part in the “Arctic Endurance” military exercise, which has been accelerated and intensified in recent days. Officials said the decision followed a series of statements by US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland.

Trump has publicly expressed interest in what he described as the “complete and total purchase” of Greenland, arguing that the Arctic territory is vital for US and global security. The White House has also suggested that military action could not be ruled out.

Tensions further escalated on Saturday when Trump threatened to impose 10 percent tariffs on eight European countries — Denmark, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland — with the rate set to rise to 25 percent by June 1. The threat was linked to the countries’ opposition to any US move to assert control over Greenland.

In response, the eight European nations issued a joint statement on Sunday condemning the tariff threat and reaffirming their shared commitment to Arctic security, stability, and respect for international law.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has growing strategic importance due to its location in the Arctic and the region’s increasing geopolitical and economic significance.
