Heavy Snowfall, Rain Claim 61 Lives Across Afghanistan

Afghanistan

Kabul, January 24, 2026 – The Europe Today: At least 61 people have been killed and 110 others injured after heavy snowfall and rain swept across several parts of Afghanistan on Wednesday and Thursday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a statement released on Saturday.

In addition to the human toll, the severe weather has completely or partially destroyed 458 homes, according to the NDMA, as cited by media reports.

The authority said the figures are preliminary, as surveys and damage assessments are still underway in various regions, noting that the casualty and damage numbers could change as more information becomes available.

Over the past three days, much of Afghanistan has experienced extremely cold temperatures and heavy snowfall, disrupting daily life and infrastructure. Several major highways and roads have been closed, including key routes connecting the national capital, Kabul, with a number of provinces.

Authorities said efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and to restore access to affected areas as weather conditions permit.
