Turkmenistan, ICRC Discuss Expanding Humanitarian Cooperation at Ashgabat Meeting

Ashgabat, March 14, 2026 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov held a meeting with Biljana Milosevic, Head of the Regional Representation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Central Asia, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on March 13, 2026.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed current issues of humanitarian cooperation and explored prospects for further strengthening collaboration between Turkmenistan and the ICRC.

The Turkmen side highlighted that the country, guided by its policy of permanent neutrality, consistently advocates for strengthening peace, trust and constructive international cooperation. Particular emphasis was placed on the humanitarian dimension of regional security and the protection of civilians.

Turkmenistan also reaffirmed its strong commitment to the norms of international humanitarian law and reiterated its support for the fundamental principles guiding humanitarian activities, including humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence.

Officials expressed appreciation for the work of the ICRC in assisting people facing challenging humanitarian conditions and in promoting awareness and adherence to international humanitarian law.

The discussions also included an exchange of views on the initiative of Turkmenistan’s President to declare 2028 as the Year of International Law, aimed at promoting global respect for legal norms and international cooperation.

In addition, the two sides reviewed issues related to monitoring the humanitarian situation in the region and considered opportunities to expand cooperation through the exchange of expertise, expert consultations and the organization of joint training programs.

Particular attention was given to strengthening the capacity of national institutions involved in humanitarian response, with both sides emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration to address humanitarian challenges effectively.
