Tokyo, April 16, 2026 – The Europe Today: China’s leading new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer BYD recorded a significant surge in its Japan sales in March 2026, nearly doubling its year-on-year performance as the company accelerates its international expansion strategy in response to mounting competition in its domestic market.
According to the Japan Automobile Importers Association, BYD registered 625 vehicles in Japan during March 2026, reflecting a 91.1 percent increase compared to 327 units in the same month last year. Data compiled from industry sources indicates that BYD’s total deliveries in Japan reached 1,142 units in the first quarter of 2026, marking growth of over 100 percent year-on-year.
Despite the strong momentum, BYD remains a relatively small player in Japan’s highly competitive automotive market. A total of 407,564 vehicles were sold in the country in March alone, with new energy vehicles accounting for 4.15 percent of the market. Of the 16,924 battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles sold during the month, BYD captured approximately 3.7 percent market share.
However, the company’s position appears more robust within the imported NEV segment. Out of 6,085 imported electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered in March, BYD secured a 10.3 percent share, signaling growing acceptance of its products among Japanese consumers.
Industry analysts note that BYD’s expansion in Japan faces headwinds, particularly following recent revisions to the country’s NEV subsidy policy. Government incentives have been reduced significantly, with subsidies per vehicle dropping from 350,000–400,000 yen to 150,000 yen, posing challenges for price competitiveness.
Globally, BYD is increasingly prioritizing overseas markets as domestic competition intensifies and subsidies in China are gradually phased out. According to industry data, the company sold 688,939 vehicles worldwide in the latest reporting period, with more than half of these deliveries coming from international markets—underscoring a strategic pivot toward exports.
In Japan, BYD currently offers a lineup of five models, including four fully electric vehicles—Sealion 7, Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal—and one plug-in hybrid, the Sealion 6. The company is also preparing to introduce a new electric city car, the Racco, later this summer, which is expected to be priced at approximately 2.5 million yen.
With its ambitious target of selling 10,000 vehicles annually in Japan, BYD continues to strengthen its footprint in the market, although significant challenges remain as it navigates regulatory changes and stiff competition from established domestic automakers.
