Indonesia-Australia 2+2 Meeting Strengthens Strategic Partnership and Maritime Cooperation

Australia

Jakarta, August 29, 2025 – The Europe Today:  The recent 2+2 meeting between Indonesia and Australia is set to enhance bilateral partnership in strategic matters, including regional stability and global dynamics, Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono has stated.

“Bilaterally, this meeting is also aimed at strengthening our defence and foreign relations sectors, particularly our contribution to nurturing peace and stability in the region,” Sugiono said during the opening of the meeting, according to a statement issued on Thursday.

The meeting convened Sugiono and Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin with their Australian counterparts, Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Richard Marles.

During the discussions, the four ministers reviewed political, security, and defence cooperation, along with geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East. They also agreed to follow up on the discussions held between President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the annual leaders’ meeting in Jakarta last May.

A key outcome of the meeting was the reinforcement of maritime cooperation through the establishment of the Indonesia-Australia Maritime Dialogue and initiatives under the Maritime Domain Awareness programme.

“As we share maritime borders, Indonesia and Australia need to strengthen maritime cooperation a step further,” Sugiono emphasized.

The two nations also agreed to enhance collaboration on conflict resolution and regional stability through the Indonesia-Australia Partnership for Peace and Stability.

The ministers further addressed developments in the Middle East, particularly the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for an immediate cessation of violence, an unconditional ceasefire, and unrestricted humanitarian access to the enclave.

Sugiono praised Australia’s position, noting its decision to announce recognition of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly next month.

Following the 2+2 meeting, Sugiono and Sjamsoeddin paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Albanese, highlighting progress in bilateral relations.

“Indonesia-Australia relations are at an extraordinary point,” Sugiono said, underscoring the shared interests between the two governments and the support of citizens from both countries.
