PM Anwar, Trump and ASEAN Leaders Pledge to Uphold Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord Amid Renewed Border Tensions

ASEAN

Petaling JayaNovember 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, US President Donald Trump, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the full and effective implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, amid renewed tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border.

The reaffirmation comes as both countries trade accusations of fresh border clashes. During their recent conversation, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized that meaningful progress must be made on demining efforts, independent of trade cooperation.

“I continue to appreciate President Trump’s personal and active commitment to resolving this matter,” Anwar stated in a post shared on his social media accounts on Sunday (Nov 16).

The tensions follow Thailand’s recent suspension of a US-brokered ceasefire deal and its demand for an apology over allegations that Cambodia had laid new landmines — a claim Cambodia denies. The dispute has had serious consequences: four Thai soldiers were injured when a PMN-2 landmine exploded during a patrol in Sisaket province, leaving one soldier with a leg amputation.

The disputed border between the two South-East Asian nations has long been a flashpoint. In July, five days of fighting resulted in at least 48 deaths and forced an estimated 300,000 people to temporarily flee the area. The ceasefire at that time was brokered by President Trump and Prime Minister Anwar.

The Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, signed by Prime Ministers Anutin and Hun Manet and witnessed by Anwar and Trump during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur last month, remains central to efforts aimed at stabilizing the region and preventing further escalation.
