Bucharest, November 19, 2025 – The Europe Today: Romania has won the international competition for a judgeship at the United Nations Dispute Tribunal (UNDT), securing 109 votes in the UN General Assembly after a rigorous, multi-stage selection process. The successful candidate, Judge Adina Elvira-Ghiță, brings more than 17 years of professional experience and will assume the position for a seven-year term beginning in July 2026.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the competition involved two main stages: an initial technical assessment followed by several rounds of voting. The selection process, overseen by the UN’s Internal Justice Council, required candidates to undergo three strict evaluation phases, underscoring the high standards applied by the United Nations.
Romania’s victory reflects the country’s continued recognition within the UN system and adds to a series of notable diplomatic achievements, including recent elections of Romanian judges to the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.
In a statement, Romanian officials highlighted that the win demonstrates the country’s strong human capital and the international respect earned by Romanian professionals. They emphasized that the government remains committed to supporting its experts on the global stage, ensuring that talent is encouraged rather than hindered.
“Romania has exemplary professionals who, through their work, strengthen our respect and influence. This success is a testament to years of dedication and a moment of trust in which Romanian specialists can see that the state is working alongside them to open doors, as they and Romania deserve,” the statement noted.
Congratulations were extended to Judge Adina Elvira-Ghiță and to the team of the Permanent Mission of Romania to the United Nations, led by Ambassador Cornel Feruță, for their efforts in securing this significant diplomatic accomplishment.
