Belém, November 23, 2025 – The Europe Today: Ethiopia has been officially announced as the host of the 32nd UN Climate Change Conference (COP32) during the COP30 Closing Plenary in Belém, Brazil, marking a historic milestone for both the nation and the African continent. The announcement positions Addis Ababa as the global hub for climate diplomacy in November 2027, bringing the world’s largest annual climate gathering back to Africa.
In its acceptance statement, H.E. Mr. Seyoum Mekonen, State Minister of Planning and Development, highlighted Ethiopia’s proven capacity to host major international conferences. With world-class infrastructure, modern conference facilities, and seamless global connectivity via Ethiopian Airlines—Africa’s largest carrier serving over 130 destinations—Addis Ababa is set to welcome more than 60,000 delegates, including representatives from governments, multilateral organizations, civil society, academia, youth groups, and the private sector.
Ethiopia emphasized that COP32 will showcase Africa’s ambition, innovation, and collective voice in shaping global climate policy. The country aims to challenge outdated narratives that depict Africa solely as a climate victim or passive recipient of aid. Instead, Ethiopia advocates for genuine partnerships, fair and accessible climate finance, and transformative green investments that benefit all developing nations and contribute to shared global prosperity.
COP32 is expected to be an inclusive, solution-oriented, and impactful conference, accelerating global climate action while advancing robust reporting frameworks, implementation mechanisms, and accountability structures. “Ethiopia welcomes the world to Addis Ababa, the Land of Origins and the Home of Climate Action and Green Transformation,” the statement read.
The nation plans to highlight its ambitious national climate initiatives, including the Green Legacy—one of the world’s largest reforestation programs—alongside significant progress in renewable energy and the transition toward a climate-resilient, green economy.
Preparations for COP32 have already commenced, with Ethiopia set to collaborate closely with the UNFCCC, all Parties, regional institutions, and international partners to ensure a successful, ambitious, and transformative conference.
As the world gears up for COP31 in Türkiye (co-led with Australia) in 2026, the road to COP32 Addis Ababa 2027 promises to become a pivotal chapter in advancing equitable, scalable, and just climate solutions worldwide.
