CIS Names Sergey Lebedev as Head of Observer Mission for Azerbaijan’s Presidential Election

Baku, January 03, 2024, The Europe Today: The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) observer mission for Azerbaijan’s upcoming early presidential election will be led by CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev, as reported by Azerbaijani media. The decision on Lebedev’s candidacy was ratified by the Council of Permanent Representatives of the CIS Participating States at the statutory and other bodies of the CIS.

The mission’s role, undertaken at the invitation of the Government of Azerbaijan, involves monitoring the electoral campaign. The Executive Committee of the CIS has extended invitations to CIS countries, urging them to nominate candidates for their representatives in the mission.

Emphasizing adherence to principles of political neutrality and non-interference, the committee affirmed that the mission’s activities will strictly align with national legislation. The early presidential election in Azerbaijan is scheduled for February 7, 2024, following a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on December 7.
