China’s Ambassador to the U.S. Advocates Responsibility and Cooperation for a Brighter Future in Bilateral Relations

Washington, January 19, 2024, The Europe Today: In a call for shared responsibility and cooperation, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng emphasized the historical significance of China-U.S. relations during a reception at the Chinese embassy in Washington. The event commemorated the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations and celebrated the 2024 Chinese New Year.

Ambassador Xie Feng reflected on the dynamic journey of the China-U.S. relationship over the past 45 years, acknowledging its twists and turns while underscoring the mutual benefits accrued by both nations and the global community. Rejecting the notion of turning away from each other, he asserted that the remodeling of one side by the other is unrealistic, emphasizing the dire consequences of conflict and confrontation.

Xie stressed the importance of acting with a sense of responsibility for history, urging adherence to the right direction in China-U.S. relations. He highlighted the need to honor common understandings between the two heads of state, transforming the San Francisco vision into a tangible reality for the sustainable development of bilateral ties.

Citing historical lessons, Xie cautioned against the emergence of a new “Cold War,” McCarthyism, and a repetition of past tragedies. He urged both nations to prioritize the well-being of their people, advocating for the removal of obstacles to people-to-people exchanges.

Ambassador Xie emphasized the global responsibility of both countries, calling for increased stability and certainty. He specifically mentioned the importance of communication and coordination on hotspots like the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Ukraine crisis, as well as addressing global challenges such as climate change and artificial intelligence.

The reception also featured messages from U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Both expressed commitment to responsibly managing the U.S.-China relationship and building on the foundation laid at the Woodside summit for the benefit of both nations and the global community.

Distinguished guests, including former U.S. ambassadors to China, leaders from various sectors, and over 700 Chinese and American attendees, came together to mark the occasion. The event showcased a collective commitment to fostering cooperation, understanding, and stability in the crucial relationship between China and the United States.
