Türkiye Conveys Condolences to Azerbaijan on 34th Anniversary of January 20 Tragedy

Ankara, January 20, 2024, The Europe Today: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye has extended its heartfelt condolences to Azerbaijan on the solemn occasion of the 34th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy. The expression of sympathy was conveyed through the official “X” account of the ministry.

In their message, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye commemorated the Azerbaijani brothers who sacrificed their lives for the independence of Azerbaijan on January 20, 1990.

The statement emphasized a deep sense of respect and compassion for those who lost their lives during the tragic events.

As the world reflects on the anniversary of January 20, 1990, it marks a poignant moment in history when, under the direct orders of Mikhail Gorbachev, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Soviet forces entered Baku and several districts of Azerbaijan. The night witnessed mass killings carried out by firing from military equipment and various weapons. The merciless violence resulted in the loss of 147 lives and injuries to 744 individuals in Baku and surrounding regions.

On this somber occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye stands in solidarity with Azerbaijan, acknowledging the sacrifices made by its people during the pursuit of independence.
