Hamburg Prosecutors Charge Man Over Alleged Plot to Overthrow German Government

Hamburg, April 09, 2024, The Europe Today: Prosecutors in Hamburg, Germany, have filed charges against a 66-year-old man accused of supporting a terrorist organization and aiding and abetting the preparation of a treasonable enterprise in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the German government.

The man, who was arrested in November last year, is said to have been a supporter of the “United Patriots” faction of the extremist “Reichsbürger” movement since at least 2022.

The Reichsbürger movement, known as “citizens of the Reich,” refuses to acknowledge the post-Second World War Federal Republic of Germany, its laws, or its institutions.

According to prosecutors, the United Patriots faction aims “to replace the liberal-democratic basic order of the Federal Republic of Germany with an authoritarian system of government modeled on the constitution of the German Reich of 1871.”

The charges reflect the seriousness with which German authorities are addressing threats posed by extremist groups that seek to undermine the country’s democratic institutions and legal framework.

The arrest and subsequent legal action underscore efforts to combat extremist ideologies and prevent activities that pose a threat to national security and stability. Germany remains vigilant against such threats, ensuring the protection of its democratic values and institutions.
