Kazakhstan Aims to Deepen Cooperation with Finland, Supports Finland’s Upcoming OSCE Chairmanship

Astana, June 01, 2024, The Europe Today: Kazakhstan has expressed a keen interest in further strengthening its cooperation with Finland and has extended its best wishes to Suomi as it prepares to chair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2025. This commitment was highlighted during a recent meeting between Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roman Vassilenko, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Finland to Kazakhstan, Soili Mäkeläinen-Buhanist, as reported by the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting underscored the dynamic and multifaceted nature of Kazakh-Finnish relations, covering political, economic, and cultural cooperation, as well as joint efforts within the OSCE and other international bodies. Both sides emphasized the importance of sustaining a robust political dialogue at the highest levels between Kazakhstan and Finland.

Deputy Minister Vassilenko noted that a recent telephone conversation between the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, reaffirmed both nations’ mutual commitment to enhancing their bilateral ties across various sectors.

In discussing economic collaboration, the diplomats praised the successful visit of Finland’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, Ville Tavio, to Kazakhstan and the productive 13th meeting of the bilateral Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation held in Astana on April 11, 2024.

The talks also delved into key issues concerning engagement within the OSCE framework and Finland’s priorities during its 2025 chairmanship, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act. Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to support Finland’s initiatives aimed at bolstering the OSCE’s capabilities across its three main dimensions: politico-military, economic and environmental, and human.

Both parties reiterated the crucial role of the OSCE in addressing regional and global challenges and confirmed their intention to continue advancing the Kazakh-Finnish partnership.

The Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to prioritize fostering international cooperation and dialogue, underscoring Kazakhstan’s commitment to collaborative efforts for regional stability and development.
