Beijing, June 18, 2024, The Europe Today: Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), China’s leading automotive lithium-ion battery manufacturer, has announced the commencement of construction for its first battery plant in northern China. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday, marking a significant expansion in the company’s production capabilities.
The new plant, located in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, will cover an area of approximately 260,000 square meters. Construction will be executed in two phases, with production anticipated to begin in 2026. The facility represents a joint venture with notable partners including Xiaomi and Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd. CATL will maintain its position as the controlling shareholder of the plant.
This strategic expansion aligns with CATL’s continued dominance in the electric vehicle (EV) battery market. According to SNE Research, CATL has held the top position in global EV battery consumption volume for seven consecutive years, achieving a 36.8 percent market share in 2023. Furthermore, CATL has led the market in global energy storage battery shipments for three consecutive years, capturing a 40 percent share in 2023.
Headquartered in Ningde, Fujian Province, CATL has established robust supply contracts with several prominent global automotive manufacturers, including BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler, and Honda. The new facility in Beijing is expected to bolster CATL’s capacity to meet the growing demand for EV batteries, reinforcing its leadership in the global market.
The Beijing plant’s construction marks a milestone in CATL’s expansion strategy, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing the EV industry and supporting the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
