Astana, June 22, 2024, The Europe Today: The 5th World Nomad Games, scheduled to take place from September 8 to 13, 2024, in Astana, Kazakhstan, have received the prestigious patronage of UNESCO, as announced by the organization.
The World Nomad Games (WNG) are the largest international sports competition dedicated to ethnic sports, showcasing the traditional games of the historically nomadic peoples of Central Asia. This year’s event is expected to attract approximately 2,000 participants from over 85 countries.
The program includes competitions in 20 main sports and 10 demonstration sports, featuring equestrian events, wrestling, traditional archery, and mind games. In addition to athletes, the Games will also draw representatives from the fields of culture and science.
The World Nomad Games play a vital role in preserving and promoting traditional national sports and culture. They also foster cultural diversity and dialogue between nations. Alongside the sports competitions, scientific conferences and cultural events are planned to highlight and popularize ethnocultural heritage.
The hosting of the WNG supports UNESCO’s Fit for Life initiative, which aims to improve health and well-being through sport. The Games also align with UNESCO’s goals of preserving intangible cultural heritage. Notably, the WNG are already included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
Within the framework of the Games, the UNESCO Almaty Regional Office will organize a high-level international scientific and practical conference focusing on the role of women in sports. This conference will be a significant part of the cultural and scientific program, underscoring the importance of gender equality and inclusion in sports.
